Quick answer: The Chateau Tongariro hotel at Whakapapa has been closed since February 2023. In March 2026 the Department of Conservation invited operators to restore and run it, but no reopening date has been set. Until then, stay at Skotel Alpine Resort in Whakapapa Village, in National Park Village about 16 km away, or in Ohakune.

Is the Chateau Tongariro open?

No. The historic hotel closed in February 2023 when its leaseholder left. In March 2026 the Government backed restoring it and the Department of Conservation opened a request for proposals from operators. Repairs are expected to cost more than NZ$10 million, so a reopening is likely years away.

Booking for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and ski season

Beds near the mountain sell out early in the ski season (July to October) and on summer weekends when the Alpine Crossing is busy. Book as soon as you have dates, and check whether the price includes a shuttle to the Crossing.
