Our review
Batu Caves is a short train ride north of Kuala Lumpur. A huge gilded statue of Lord Murugan stands at the foot of the 272 colourful steps that climb to the Temple Cave, a vast cavern with shrines lit by openings in the rock.
Keep food out of sight on the climb, as the resident macaques are bold. The site is busiest during the Thaipusam festival, usually in late January or February.
