Saint Martin Island

Bangladesh’s only coral island, in the Bay of Bengal

Description

Saint Martin’s Island, locally known as Narikel Jinjira, is Bangladesh’s only coral island, a small stretch of coastline in the Bay of Bengal near the southern tip of the country. It’s reachable by boat from Teknaf, with the crossing itself part of the experience.

Expect clear water, quiet beaches, and fresh seafood rather than resorts and nightlife — this is a trip for travellers who want to slow down for a few days.

When to go

Saint Martin is a winter destination. Boats from Teknaf and Cox’s Bazar run in the dry season, roughly November to February, when the sea is calm. In recent years the government has limited visitor numbers and overnight stays to protect the island’s coral and wildlife, so check the current rules and boat schedule before you book.

Where to stay

Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to beachfront resorts on the west and north beaches. See our Shuktara Beach Resort guide for sea-view suites with private beach access, or browse all Saint Martin hotels.

Getting around

There are no cars on the island. Most visitors walk or rent a bicycle or van, and a loop of the island takes a few hours. Chhera Dwip, the small islet off the southern tip, can be reached on foot at low tide or by local boat.

Depart Teknaf by boat in the morning, arrive on the island by early afternoon. Settle in, walk the beach at sunset.
Cycle or walk across the island, visit the coral beach on the southern tip, and try the local seafood catch of the day.
Morning swim, then the return boat to Teknaf in the early afternoon.
